MDAC requirements for your trip

Mandatory for everyone

You need the MDAC. Visa-free does not mean form-free. No exemptions for tourists or business travelers.

72-hour window

Submit your MDAC within 72 hours before you arrive. Too early or too late, the system rejects it. Set a reminder for 2 days before your flight.

What you need ready

Your passport, your flight itinerary, and your hotel address in Malaysia. Have them open before you start. Takes under 5 minutes.

Middle name catches people out

Your passport says Nguyen Van Nam. But many Vietnamese travelers enter just Nguyen Nam and leave out Van. Your MDAC must match your passport exactly.

Best time for Vietnamese travelers to visit Malaysia

Vietnamese travelers plan their Malaysia trips around national holidays and school breaks. Peak periods mean busier flights. Plan ahead.

Tet (Lunar New Year) - Jan/Feb: The biggest holiday in Vietnam. Many families travel abroad during Tet. Kuala Lumpur and Penang fill up fast. Airfare spikes.
Reunification Day (30 Apr) & Labour Day (1 May): A combined holiday that creates a 4-5 day break. Short Malaysia getaways from HCMC and Hanoi. Direct flights sell out quickly.
Summer school break - June to August: Vietnamese families with school-age children travel during summer. Langkawi beaches, Genting theme parks. Lots of Vietnamese visitors.
National Day (2 September): Another short break that prompts last-minute travel to Malaysia. Higher airfare, fuller hotels. Submit MDAC early to avoid timing issues.

Vietnamese name format on MDAC - what to watch out for

Vietnamese names follow a specific structure. And the MDAC form follows a Western one. They do not match up the way you expect.

How Vietnamese names work

A Vietnamese name has three parts: Family name (Nguyen, Tran, Le, Pham, Hoang), Middle name (Van, Thi, Hong, Minh, Duc), and Given name (Nam, Anh, Hoa, Tuan, Linh).

Example: Nguyen Van Nam

  • Vietnamese order: Nguyen (family) + Van (middle) + Nam (given)
  • MDAC Western order: Nam (given) + Van (middle) + Nguyen (family)
  • Common mistake: Entering just Nguyen Nam, leaving out Van. Or putting Nguyen Van as the given name.

The middle name (chα»― đệm) is important. It tells your generation and your family line. If you are one of many Nguyens, your middle name is how immigration tells you apart. Include it on your MDAC.

Correct MDAC format: Enter your name exactly as shown on your passport bio page. In the order printed there. Most Vietnamese passports show given + middle + family.
Common error: Leaving out your middle name. If Van or Thi is in your passport, it must be in your MDAC. Not optional.

Common MDAC mistakes to watch for

Small errors cause delays at check-in or immigration. Avoid these.

  • Leaving out your middle name. Nguyen Van Nam becomes Nguyen Nam on the form. That does not match your passport. Immigration notices.
  • Putting your family name where your given name goes. And vice versa. Vietnamese order and MDAC order are different. Follow your passport exactly.
  • Submitting too early. Some travelers submit days ahead to get it done. But the system rejects submissions outside the 72-hour window.
  • Entering the wrong departure city. Flying from Ho Chi Minh City? Use SGN or Ho Chi Minh City. Not Saigon or HCMC unless the form asks for it.

Transit through Malaysia - do you need MDAC?

Transiting through KLIA? Here is when you need MDAC and when you do not.

Staying in the transit zone: If you do not pass through immigration, MDAC is generally not needed. Stay airside and you are fine.
Leaving the airport: If you step out for a city tour during a long layover, you need MDAC. Complete it before you leave Vietnam.
Multi-segment flights: Arriving in Malaysia then flying to another country within 30 days? MDAC applies unless you stay airside the whole time.
Airlines may still check: Even if you think you are exempt, check-in staff at Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat may ask for MDAC proof. If unsure, fill it in.
