Malaysia MDAC for Icelanders: the short answer

If you hold an Icelandic passport and you enter Malaysia, complete the MDAC before you travel. It is a digital arrival card. It does not replace passport control, visa rules, or the final decision by Malaysian immigration.

Flying from Keflavik (KEF) with a connection in Copenhagen, London, Frankfurt, or Helsinki? Check the date you land in Malaysia. That is the date that matters for the 3-day MDAC window.

Answer

Yes, Icelanders need MDAC for Malaysia.

Timing

Submit within 3 days before arrival.

Use case

Tourism, business trips, family visits, and entry after transit.

Visa-free entry for Icelandic passport holders

Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). Icelandic passport holders get visa-free entry to Malaysia for up to 90 days. This is longer than what many other nationalities receive, and it covers tourism and short business visits.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry into Malaysia. Keep a printed or digital copy of your return ticket handy. Malaysian immigration may ask for proof of onward travel.

Do not confuse visa-free entry with the MDAC. They are separate. The visa-free policy lets you board the plane without a visa. The MDAC is the arrival card you file before you land. You need both.

Status

Visa-free for Icelandic passports.

Max stay

Up to 90 days per visit.

Passport rule

Must be valid 6+ months beyond entry.

Travel logistics: getting from Iceland to Malaysia

There are no direct flights from Iceland to Malaysia. You will connect through a major European hub. The most common routes go from Keflavik International Airport (KEF) to a transit airport in mainland Europe, then on to Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

Via Copenhagen with Icelandair

Icelandair flies from Keflavik to Copenhagen (CPH) daily. From CPH, connect to Kuala Lumpur on Finnair or Turkish Airlines. The Icelandair leg is a standard stopover route for Icelanders heading east.

Via London with British Airways

British Airways connects Keflavik to London Heathrow (LHR). From LHR, direct flights to Kuala Lumpur on BA or Malaysia Airlines. Total travel time around 18-20 hours with the connection.

Via Frankfurt with Lufthansa

Lufthansa flies Keflavik to Frankfurt (FRA) several times a week. From FRA, Lufthansa and Malaysia Airlines operate flights to Kuala Lumpur. Frankfurt is a strong option for Icelanders who prefer German carriers.

Via Helsinki with Finnair

Finnair connects Keflavik to Helsinki (HEL). From Helsinki, Finnair flies direct to Kuala Lumpur. This is one of the shortest connecting routes for Icelanders, with HEL being Finnairs main Asian gateway hub.

Peak travel times from Iceland to Malaysia

Certain times of the year are busier for Icelandic travelers heading to Malaysia. Plan ahead if you are traveling during these periods.

Icelandic summer (June-August)

Peak holiday season in Iceland. Many Icelanders take extended summer breaks. Flights and MDAC applications increase during this period.

Thorablo< (February)

The midwinter festival of Thorrablot is a traditional Icelandic celebration. Some travelers use the February break for a warm-weather escape to Malaysia.

Reykjavik Culture Night (Aug)

Held in mid-August, Culture Night draws visitors to Reykjavik. Right after the event, some Icelanders head to Malaysia for the late summer season.

Christmas markets (December)

Icelandic Christmas markets run through December. After the holiday period, many Icelanders travel to warmer destinations like Malaysia for New Year.

Name issues for Icelandic travelers: the patronymic system

Iceland uses a patronymic naming system. There are no family surnames. A son of Jón is Jónsson. A daughter of Jón is Jónsdóttir. This is the single most confusing part of the MDAC form for Icelandic travelers, and getting it wrong can cause delays.

The MDAC form has one surname field and one given name field. If your name is Ólafur Jónsson, your given name is Ólafur and your surname is Jónsson. Do not put Jónsson in any other field. If your name is Guðrún Jónsdóttir, your surname is Jónsdóttir, not Jónsson. The patronymic changes based on your fathers name and your gender.

Some Icelanders also have a middle name, which is rare. Check your passport carefully. If your passport lists only a given name and a patronymic, enter them in the corresponding fields. The given name and surname fields are the only ones that matter for the MDAC.

Patronymic as surname

Jónsson goes in the surname field, not the middle name field. Example: given name = Ólafur, surname = Jónsson. This matches how your Icelandic passport lists your name.

Date format reminder

Iceland uses DD.MM.YYYY with dots. The MDAC form uses DD/MM/YYYY with slashes. Both put day before month, but the dot versus slash difference trips some people up. Double check the order of day and month.

Common MDAC mistakes Icelandic travelers should avoid

These mistakes cause the most trouble for travelers flying from Iceland to Malaysia.

  • Putting your patronymic in the middle name field instead of the surname field. If your name is Jónsdóttir, that is your surname on the MDAC form. There is no middle name field on the MDAC.
  • Entering the Reykjavik departure date instead of the Malaysia arrival date. After a connection in Copenhagen or London, the arrival day in Malaysia may differ from the day you left Iceland.
  • Using the Icelandic DD.MM.YYYY dot format when the MDAC form uses DD/MM/YYYY slashes. While the day-month order is the same, entering dots instead of slashes can cause confusion or rejection on the form.
  • Not checking passport validity. Malaysian rules require 6 months of passport validity beyond the entry date. Icelandic passports are valid for 10 years for adults. Check the expiry date before you book your flights.

Malaysia MDAC requirements for Icelandic passport holders

Valid Icelandic passport

Enter your name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, and expiry date exactly as shown on your passport. Pay attention to the patronymic: Jónsson or Jónsdóttir is your surname.

Malaysia arrival date

Use the date you arrive in Malaysia. With connecting flights through Europe, the landing date may differ from when you leave Keflavik.

Transit point and flight number

Have your airline, flight numbers, point of departure (Keflavik), and entry point in Malaysia ready before you start the form.

First address in Malaysia

Enter your first hotel, apartment, or family address in Malaysia. If you switch accommodation later, list the first place where you stay.

How Icelanders should apply for MDAC

Step 1

Check your arrival date

Count from the day you land in Malaysia. With connections through Copenhagen, London, or Frankfurt, that may be a day after you depart Reykjavik.

Step 2

Prepare your documents

Have your passport open. Check that your patronymic (Jónsson or Jónsdóttir) is entered in the surname field, not as a middle name. Have your flight and hotel details ready.

Step 3

Start the form

Use the Apply for MDAC button on this page. Enter each traveler separately. Children need their own submission too.

Step 4

Keep the confirmation

Save the confirmation email on your phone. You may need it at check-in at Keflavik or at immigration in Malaysia.

Popular destinations in Malaysia for Icelandic travelers

Iceland is known for its dramatic volcanoes, geysers, and green highlands. Many Icelanders visiting Malaysia are drawn to the tropical contrast: warm weather year-round, lush rainforests, and a completely different food culture.

Kuala Lumpur

The capital and main entry point. See the Petronas Towers, explore Batu Caves, and visit the Central Market. KL is the hub for onward travel in Malaysia.

Penang

George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Famous for street food, colonial architecture, and vibrant night markets. A short flight or ferry from KL.

Langkawi

An archipelago of 99 islands with white sand beaches, duty-free shopping, and cable car rides. Popular for beach holidays and island hopping.

Cameron Highlands

Rolling green tea plantations and cool mountain air. Icelanders who miss the green landscapes of home will feel right here. A few hours drive from KL.

Transit through Malaysia for Icelandic travelers

Icelandic passport holders transiting through a Malaysian airport follow the same MDAC rules as other nationalities. If you change planes at KLIA or klia2 and stay in the international transit area, you do not need to pass immigration. In this case, the MDAC is not required.

But if you plan to leave the airport, clear immigration, collect checked luggage, or switch from KLIA to klia2 by road, you enter Malaysia. That means you need the MDAC. Even a short city stopover during a long connection counts as entry.

Airside transit (no MDAC needed)

You stay in the international transit zone. You do not clear immigration. You do not collect bags. You board your next flight.

Entering Malaysia (MDAC needed)

You clear immigration, collect bags, leave the airport, or take a land transfer between terminals. Submit the MDAC before you arrive in Malaysia.
