Malaysia Digital Arrival Card for Travelers from Hong Kong
HKSAR passport holders get 90 days visa-free in Malaysia. Great news for your trip. But you still need the MDAC before you arrive. It is a separate requirement from visa status and applies to most short-term visitors entering the country.
Flying from Hong Kong International Airport? Cathay Pacific runs multiple daily direct flights to Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and HK Express also operate direct HKG to KUL routes. Flight time is about 4 hours no jet lag to worry about. Complete your MDAC within 72 hours of arrival and double check your passport number against your HKSAR document exactly.
Traveling during Chinese New Year (January to February), National Day Golden Week (first week of October), or the summer months? Those are the busiest periods for Hong Kong travelers heading to Malaysia. Apply a day early to be safe. And if you have a connecting flight through KLIA to another destination, remember that staying airside means no MDAC needed but leaving the transit zone means you do.
Kuala Lumpur shopping, Penang street food, and Langkawi beaches top the list for travelers from Hong Kong. Many also climb Mount Kinabalu in Sabah or relax in the Cameron Highlands tea plantations. The same MDAC covers your whole trip across Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. List the hotel where you stay first as your Malaysia address on the form.
Malaysia MDAC requirements for travelers from Hong Kong
Who needs MDAC
Most travelers from Hong Kong entering Malaysia need to submit MDAC before arrival. This includes tourists and short-term visitors regardless of visa-free status.
When to apply from Hong Kong
You can submit MDAC within 3 days (72 hours) before your arrival date. Not earlier, not later. Set a reminder on your phone before you fly.
What you need
Your passport, your flight details, and where you are staying in Malaysia. Have these ready before you start the form.
MDAC is not a visa
MDAC is an arrival card, not a visa. HKSAR passports are visa-free for 90 days. You still fill in the MDAC for every visit. Both rules apply.
What travelers from Hong Kong should prepare before MDAC submission
Get these ready and the form takes about 3 minutes.
Valid passport
Use the exact name, number and expiry date printed on your passport. Not a scan, not a photo. If you hold both HKSAR and BNO, use the one you will travel on.
Travel dates
Know your arrival and departure dates before you start. Changing them later means a new submission. Hong Kong travelers often book short 4-5 day trips to KL so mark your dates carefully.
Flight details
Have your flight number and airline ready. Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and HK Express all fly direct from HKG to KUL. Include the flight number exactly as shown on your booking confirmation.
Address in Malaysia
Your hotel name and address for your first night. Hong Kong address format is different from Malaysia write your Malaysia hotel address in the local format: street name, city, postcode, state. If you are not sure yet, book something refundable.
Common MDAC mistakes travelers from Hong Kong should avoid
Catching these early saves you time at immigration.
- Putting your family name in the given name field. If you are Chan Tai-man, Chan goes in the surname field and Tai-man goes in the given name field. The MDAC form follows Western order, not Chinese order.
- Entering a Hong Kong address in the Malaysian address field using HK format. Malaysian addresses expect street name, city, postcode. Hong Kong addresses use flat, floor, building, district. Convert your accommodation details to local format.
- Submitting with the wrong passport if you have both HKSAR and BNO. Check which passport you will present at immigration and use only that one on the MDAC. Mixing them up causes name and number mismatches.
- Forgetting that visa-free does not mean MDAC-free. Both rules apply. No MDAC means trouble at immigration even with a valid HKSAR passport.
