Do Cubans need a visa for Malaysia?

Yes. Cuban passport holders need a visa to enter Malaysia. You cannot enter visa-free like some other nationalities. Apply at the Malaysian embassy before your trip.

The MDAC is separate from your visa. Think of it this way: your visa lets you in, the MDAC tells immigration when you arrive and where you are staying. You need both.

Your visa allows a stay of up to 30 days. Your MDAC must match your visa dates exactly.

Flights from Cuba to Malaysia

There are no direct flights from Cuba to Malaysia. You will need at least one stopover.

Most Cuban travelers fly from Havana (HAV) through a European or Middle Eastern hub. Popular routes go through Madrid (Iberia), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), or Doha (Qatar Airways) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL).

Total travel time is around 24 to 30 hours depending on your layover. Book your connection with enough time to avoid a tight transfer.

Best time for Cubans to visit Malaysia

Cuba's travel peaks during July and August (summer holidays) and around Christmas and New Year. If you plan to travel during these months, apply for your visa and MDAC early.

Malaysia's dry season runs from March to October. This is the most popular time for Cuban visitors, especially for trips to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi.

Planning a trip in August? Book your MDAC application at least two weeks ahead. Everyone else is traveling too.

Cuban names on the MDAC form

Cuban names follow the Spanish naming system. You have a given name, a first surname (apellido), and a second surname.

On the MDAC form, enter your full given name in the given name field. Then enter both surnames in the family name field, exactly as they appear on your passport.

Example: "José Antonio García Martínez." The family name field gets both "García Martínez". Leaving out the second surname is the most common mistake Cuban travelers make.

Common MDAC mistakes for Cuban travelers

• Missing the second surname: Cuban passports show two surnames. Enter both in the family name field. One is not enough.
• Visa first, MDAC second: Some travelers apply for MDAC before securing their visa. You need the visa first, then the MDAC.
• Wrong travel dates: Your MDAC must match your visa dates. If your visa says October 1 to October 30, your MDAC cannot say September 28.
• Address format: Cuban addresses use a different structure. Write your accommodation address in Malaysia clearly, including the street, building number, city, and state.
• Last-minute application: Cuban visa processing already takes time. Do not add MDAC stress on top of it. Apply for MDAC within the 3-day window before arrival, not at the airport.

Popular Malaysia destinations for Cuban visitors

Cuban travelers often visit Kuala Lumpur for shopping and city life, Penang for street food and heritage, and Langkawi for beaches and island relaxation. Malacca is also popular for history and culture.

If you are used to Cuba's Caribbean beaches, you will find something familiar in the islands of Penang and Langkawi, but with a completely different food scene.

Transit through Malaysia for Cuban travelers

If you transit through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and stay in the international transit area, you do not need MDAC. You do not pass immigration, so no form is required.

But if you leave the transit zone, collect your luggage, or switch terminals that require immigration clearance, you must complete the MDAC. Even for a short stop in Kuala Lumpur, if you step outside the airport, MDAC applies.

Always confirm current official requirements with your airline and the Malaysian Immigration Department before you travel.
